The Regina Police Service has some safety tips for children and their parents to promote safe Trick-or-Treating on Halloween night:
- Choose costumes that are light-colored and use reflective tape on costumes and bags to make children more visible.
- Use facial makeup instead of a mask; Trick-or-treaters need to see as well as be seen.
- Have children carry a flashlight.
- Make sure children’s costumes fit well. Long hems and oversize garments can trip them up.
- Have a planned route and travel in groups, accompanied by a responsible adult.
- Stick to well-lit streets, avoiding back alleys.
- Travel up one side of the street and then down the other; don’t cross at mid-block.
- Do Trick-or-Treating early in the evening.
- Children should not approach houses that have no lights on, and should never go inside any house. Wait outside the door for treats.
- Children should save all treats until they get home. Parents should examine all treats and discard those items that aren’t sealed.
- Don’t accept homemade treats, unless the person giving them is known to a parent or supervising adult.
- If you see someone in distress, offer help or get help. For emergencies and crimes in progress, call 9-1-1.
