Three male youths: ages 15, 16 and 17, are in police custody and expected to face charges as the result of a weapons incident that began around 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9, 2013, in the 1100 block of Retallack Street.
At approximately 8:09 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 a police officer was flagged down by a motorist who indicated that, moments earlier, he had been driving east-bound on 6th Avenue between Rae and Retallack Street when his vehicle was struck on the rear quarter panel, driver’s side, by a projectile fired from a house in the 1100 block Retallack Street. Early information indicated the weapon may have been a pellet gun, but police secured the area, treating the call as a firearms complaint. The Communications Centre advised the occupants of neighbouring houses to stay indoors, while police tried to establish phone contact with the occupants of the suspect house. Shortly after 9:00 a.m., after negotiation, people started to emerge from the house, with the last of the occupants coming out after 10:30 a.m. It appears there were eight people in the house: one adult female, three female young persons, three male young persons and a male toddler. The three male youths were taken into custody by police to be questioned in connection with the discharge. It is anticipated there will be charges laid. Police believe the weapon was a pellet gun, but have not yet recovered the weapon used.
Investigation into this matter is ongoing. Further details will be released as soon as they are available.
