The Regina Police Service is pleased to report that ongoing investigation into the recent theft of a religious artifact has yielded the stolen item and returned it to its proper home. The item, a crozier, or Bishop’s staff, is about 100 years old, jewel-studded and bears ornate carvings.
On October 23, 2013, police received a report of a possible theft from a cathedral in the 1800 block of McIntyre Street. The Reverend reported that sometime between September 22nd and October 13th, someone removed the crozier from a location where it had been temporarily stored, due to construction at the church. The theft of this unusual item was the subject of a Crime Stoppers episode which aired the week of November 11th. As the result of ongoing investigation into this theft, police located the crozier on November 18, 2013. The item has been somewhat damaged, but is intact. Police were able to contact the Reverend and make arrangements to return the crozier to its owners. Although the item was recovered, there are still many unanswered questions about its removal from the cathedral. At this time, there is not evidence sufficient to focus on a specific suspect or lay charges.
Since this case is still not concluded, police are reminding the public that anyone with information on this theft can call police at 777-6500 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
