The Regina Police Service reports the deployment of a CEW, or Conducted Energy Weapon, in the arrest, this afternoon, of an adult male. This notification is in keeping with a commitment from the Regina Police Service to notify the public of every deployment of a CEW, also commonly known as a Taser. This arrest occurred just before 3:00 p.m. today, Thursday, August 21, 2014.
At approximately 2:49 p.m. on Thursday, August 21, 2014, police were dispatched to Bruce Place, in the Normanview neighbourhood, for a report of a male, in the street, who was causing a disturbance. The preliminary indication was that the male appeared to be intoxicated, was acting out, physically hitting vehicles and yelling. He also appeared to have blood on his face and hands. Police arrived on the scene and, in order to take the male safely into custody, a CEW was deployed. The male was transported to hospital by EMS for assessment. Police determined that the male had come from a residence on the street and, when they entered the premises, they found an adult female who had sustained an apparent stab wound to the leg. The female victim also appeared highly intoxicated. She was transported to hospital with what was described as a non-life-threatening injury.
This incident is currently under investigation. The officer’s use of the CEW will be documented and examined, as is every use of force by a Regina Police Service member. There are no other details for release at this time. Anyone who may have information is asked to contact the Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
