Motorists in Regina may have notice a few more officers on the streets last week. The Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (S.T.E.P.) is a partnership between Law Enforcement agencies in Saskatchewan, as well as Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI). Through STEP, police services combine resources to take traffic enforcement and education to various Saskatchewan cities. This was the third STEP traffic blitz in Saskatchewan this year, with previous events in Prince Albert and Yorkton. Regina’s STEP blitz ran on Wednesday, September 16th and Thursday, September 17th, 2015. This traffic enforcement blitz included representatives from Saskatchewan Government Insurance, Saskatchewan Municipal Police agencies, Saskatchewan Highways & Infrastructure (Highway Transport Patrol), Saskatchewan Justice, Ministry of Finance, Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Police, and RCMP from across the province.
Officers and civilian staff from the above-mentioned organizations worked together to improve road safety, with the ultimate goal of reducing injuries and fatalities on Saskatchewan roads. Officers, along with car seat technicians, and other crew members, as needed, performed traffic stop checks at various Regina locations, including near school zones and residential areas. The crews mainly focused on speeding, unregistered vehicles, car seats, illegal use of cell phones, and seat belt violations. Officers were also on the look-out for other offenses, such as impaired drivers.
The statistics for the two-day STEP blitz are as follows:
