Did you know one of the best deterrents to criminal activity is the presence of a large, fun-loving, law-abiding crowd? (Does anyone remember Grey Cup?) The Regina Police Service is encouraging Regina residents to come to Wascana Park to celebrate Canada’s 149th birthday.
It’s true: organizers of major events have long known that the presence of law-abiding, legitimate users of a public space, decreases the likelihood of social disorder in that space. The Regina Police Service is encouraging residents and visitors to come out to Wascana Park for Canada Day activities. RPS will have an increased police presence at the park of both uniformed and plain-clothes officers. They will work closely with event staff, hired private security and about 100 volunteers to ensure Canada’s birthday party in Regina is fun and safe for all. Members of the public are asked to do their part by reviewing safety plans with children, driving and parking safely and legally, locking vehicles, securing their property and respecting other peoples’ property. Motorists: please follow direction with respect to road closures and be especially attentive to pedestrians, who may be distracted by the sights and sounds of Canada Day celebrations. If you are celebrating with an alcoholic beverage (or two) please have a designated driver or some other safe ride home.
Let’s make Canada’s 149th Birthday memorable for all the right reasons! Happy Canada Day, Regina!
