On November 5, 2016, at approximately 6:05 p.m., police were dispatched to Hamilton Street near Saskatchewan Drive for the report of an assault with a weapon.
Preliminary investigation indicates a Loss Prevention Officer (LPO) from a nearby retail store witnessed a 31 year-old female putting on a store merchandise jacket and allegedly leaving the store without paying. The LPO approached the female and identified himself, attempting an arrest. The female tried to get away and a physical altercation ensued. It’s alleged the female suspect revealed a knife and stabbed the LPO. In spite of the injury, the LPO was able to get the suspect handcuffed. Police arrived and took the female suspect into custody. A bag was seized with additional stolen merchandise. The female was arrested and charged. The Loss Prevention Officer, a 25 year-old male, was taken to hospital by EMS for injuries consistent with a stabbing. The injuries are described as non-life threatening.
Thirty-one year-old Janelle Ruth Harriett SANGWAIS (DOB: 1985/10/06), of Regina, is charged with:
- Theft shoplifting under $5,000 [CC 334(B)];
- Failure to comply [CC 733.1(1)];
- Assault with a weapon [CC 267(A)];
- Possession of a weapon [CC 88];
SANGWAIS made her first appearance on these charges in Provincial Court today, November 7, 2016, at 9:30 a.m.
