The Regina Police Service is, once again, encouraging Regina residents to:
- Lock and secure their property, including detached garages and vehicles; and
- Remove valuables, including garage door openers, from plain sight inside vehicles.
There has been a spike in this type of crime this week, especially in an area in the City’s west and northwest neighbourhoods.
The Regina Police Service has received seven reports of garage Break & Enters, believed to have occurred sometime the night of May 8, 2017. These occurred in the following blocks in west and northwest Regina:
- 6300 block – 8th Avenue (two incidents)
- 6200 block – 8th Avenue
- 7300 block – 5th Avenue
- 7800 block Sparrow Street
- 0-100 block Krauss Street (two incidents)
It appears detached garages were the most common target. In some cases, the “man” doors were unlocked or not secure because the door was in poor condition. The items stolen by perpetrators included sports, equipment, clothing, sunglasses and CDs. In two of the cases, the thieves also stole garage door openers, which could signal intentions for a return visit and easy access to the garages through the main doors. Each of these cases is under investigation, but police have not identified suspects at this time.
There were also three Theft From Auto (TFA) incidents in the same vicinity, during the same time frame. They were in the 7700 block Venture Road, 7800 block Sparrow Street and 300 block Prairieview Drive. Entry to the vehicles was possibly by way of unlocked doors. Each incident resulted in the theft of cash and two cases involved the theft of a purse or wallet with contents including credit cards and identification documents.
Regina residents are encouraged to contact police if they notice any suspicious activity. Anyone with information about these incidents is encouraged to contact the Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. If you see a crime in progress, please call 9-1-1.
