On Monday, October 23, 2017, a Regina Police Service member discharged a CEW, commonly known as a Taser, in an arrest. This advisory is in keeping with the Regina Police Service’s commitment to notify the public each time a CEW is discharged against a person.
This CEW deployment occurred in the October 23 arrest of a forty-two year old male, which was the subject of a previous news release.
During the attempt to take the male safely into custody, a CEW was deployed; however this deployment did not lead to successful contact with the male, and was not an instrumental factor in the arrest.
The Regina Police Service would like to apologize for the delayed public advisory of the CEW deployment; the required use-of-force documentation and review processes began right after the event.
The use of the CEW, as with any other use of force, has been documented as per policy and will be reviewed by a Use of Force Committee – a committee within the Service. All uses of force are also reported to the Saskatchewan Police Commission – an oversight body independent of the Regina Police Service.
