A 15 year-old youth is facing a number of charges in connection with a number of incidents involving auto theft and possession of stolen property. On June 10, 2018, at approximately 3:30 a.m. police were dispatched to the 1600 block of East Longworthy Bay for the report of a theft in progress. Police arrived to learn that a group of males were going through cars in the area. A resident came out and confronted the suspects. One of the suspects then pulled out a machete and threatened the resident.
Approximately a half-hour earlier, at about 3:00 a.m., a vehicle was stolen from the 3100 block of East Tregarva Drive. At approximately 4:00 am, police observed the stolen vehicle going through a red light on Dewdney Avenue and Park Street. The stolen vehicle was located, abandoned, in the alley between 1900 block of Montreal Street and Quebec Street, and a hatchet was recovered by police inside. A canine track was executed, which led to the successful arrest of a fifteen year-old male, believed to be involved in the incident on East Longworthy Drive. The suspect was bitten by the police dog in the course of the arrest; he received treatment in hospital and was transported to the police detention area.
Further investigation also alleges the fifteen year-old male was involved in stolen vehicle incident which occurred on May 12, 2018, where a vehicle, reported stolen to the White Butte RCMP detachment, was recovered in a Regina alley.
A fifteen year-old, who cannot be named in accordance with the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was charged with:
- Flight while pursued by police officer [CC 249.1(1)];
- 2 X Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 [CC 355(A)];
- Theft of motor vehicle [CC 333.1(1)];
- Assault with a weapon [CC 267(A)]; and
- 2 X Fail to comply [YCJA 137].
The youth made his first appearance on these charges in Provincial Youth Court today, June 11, 2018, at 9:30 a.m.
