As we progress well into the fall season, the Regina Police Service would like to make the public aware of emerging trends relating to theft and to remind residents to practice proactive crime-prevention strategies.
Police have received a high number of reports of theft from auto in October. From October 2 to October 30, 2018, 313 thefts-from-auto have been reported. An emerging trend related to theft from autos is theft of license plates. In October 2018, 84 license plates have been reported stolen. Police reminds vehicle owners to lock their vehicle doors, remove keys and garage door openers as well as items of value. Check the license plate after your vehicle has been parked outside and report thefts of license plates to police.
Thefts from mailboxes in apartment and condo buildings are also a trend of note. In the past two weeks, multiple apartments and condos in the Normanview area as well as the area east of Park Street have reported incidents of thefts from mailboxes . To reduce the risk of theft, remove mail regularly from your mailbox, and account for your mailbox key at all times. Keep an eye out for suspicious activity in lobbies and entrance ways in your apartment or condo building.
Investigating crime is the role of police; but, crime prevention is a collaborative, community responsibility. Preventing a crime from happening at all is the ideal, so be sure to call 306-777-6500 if you observe suspicious behavior in your neighbourhood. Always call 9-1-1 in an emergency. If you are victim of crime, be sure to report it to police. We cannot investigate what we don’t know. Call 306-777-6500 and you may be able to make your report by phone or online. You may also be directed to come in to Police Headquarters. Offer as much information as you can, such as: date, time, description, and any photos or video. Property crimes often occur in clusters; reporting crime to police may assist with investigation into other, similar incidents in your area. The Regina Police Service thanks you for your participation in crime-prevention.
