NOTE: This news release is an update to an investigation which was the subject of a news release on April 4th. That news release advised of an ongoing investigation which involved a male suspect carrying a gun and the police use of a CEW. The following release provides an update on arrests and charges.
This investigation began at approximately 4:10 a.m. on Thursday, April 4, 2019, when police were dispatched to the 1800 block of Saskatchewan Drive for a report of a male with a firearm. The male was located near Rose Street and Saskatchewan Drive, still in possession of the gun. A CEW was deployed and the male was taken into custody. The male received medical treatment and was transported to cells.
Investigation yielded evidence that the male involved in the CEW incident and another male at the scene, were responsible for the firearm incident. Further investigation led to the arrest of both men and the following charges:
Twenty-two year-old Mahdi Abdullah MAHDI, of Regina, is charged with:
- Pointing a Firearm [87 CC];
- Obstruction of a Peace Officer [129(a) CC];
- Attempt Murder [239(a) CC];
- Use of a firearm during the commission of an indictable offence [85(1)(a) CC];
- Possession of a Firearm obtained by crime [96(1) CC];
- Careless use of a firearm [86(1) CC];
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose [88 CC];
- Carry a concealed weapon [90 CC]; and
- Possession of a loaded firearm [95(1) CC].
Thirty year-old Abdifatah Abdullah HASSAN, of Regina , is charged with:
- Obstruction of a Peace Officer [129a CC];
- Possession of a Firearm obtained by crime [96(1) CC];
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose [88 CC];
- Carry a concealed weapon [90 CC];
- Possession of a loaded firearm [95(1) CC];
- Fail to comply with a recognizance [145(3) CC];
- Unauthorized possession of a prohibited device or ammunition in a motor vehicle [94(1) CC];
- Store a firearm or restricted weapon contrary to regulations [86(2) CC];
- Possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized [92(1) CC]; and
- Possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary of prohibition order [117.01(1) CC].
