It is the duty of the Regina Police Service to protect and apply privacy to all the information under its control. The Access and Privacy Unit is responsible for ensuring private information is treated, stored, and accessed properly within the Regina Police Service.
The unit is made up of two civilian members who respond to all Access to Information Requests made under the Local Authority Freedom of Information Protection Act (LAFOIP). The Access and Privacy Unit is also responsible for privacy training of civilian staff and sworn members, privacy breach investigations and mitigation, privacy impact assessments, information sharing agreements and support related to Access and Privacy and Local Authority Freedom of Information Protection Act Legislation.
Local Authority Freedom of Information Protection Act (LA FOIP) is a provincial Act that applies to various public bodies in the province of Saskatchewan, including the Regina Police Service. The Act allows for:
– Right of Access: every person has right to submit a Request for Access to information held by the Regina Police Services.
– Protection: the Act provides protection for both the public and Regina Police Services Employee.
– Rules: the Act sets out rules around collection, use and disclosure of personal information.
– Transparency: The Act allows for transparency with the public, while at the same time allowing for Privacy of confidential information.
There are two types of requests for records that can be made pursuant to LA FOIP: personal requests and general requests.
Personal Requests
A personal request is a request for records that contain an individual’s personal information. Either you or someone who you have authorized (in writing) to access your personal information (e.g. your lawyer) can make a written request for records containing your personal information.
Examples of personal requests are for information related to the applicant for which an exemption to privacy may apply, such as information regarding an investigation.
General Requests
A general request is a request for records that do not contain the applicant’s personal information.
Examples of general requests are requests for budget records, training materials, or statistical information.
