During the month of September, Regina Police Service members will be directing attention to traffic offences in school zones and playground areas, with particular emphasis on speeding violations.
As part of Traffic Focus of the Month, strategic enforcement initiatives targeting school zone offences will be conducted the entire month of September. Motorists are reminded to pay renewed attention to school zones. Police officers will be enforcing speed limits in school zones, and remind motorists that school and playground speed limits of 40 km/h, are in effect from 8:00 am till 10:00 pm seven days a week. Motorists are asked to consider that for every kilometer over the speed limit a vehicle travels: stopping distances increase, reaction time (the time to avoid a collision) decreases and likelihood of serious injury or death in a pedestrian collision increases. Chances of pedestrian fatality double when the vehicle speed is increased from 40 km/h to 50 km/h. Most children know about crosswalk safety, but motorists should remember that children may be distracted by friends and the day’s events.
The fine for speeding in school zones starts at $190.00 and increases depending on the violator’s speed. The Regina Police Service commends those motorists who practice safe driving habits and encourages all drivers to respect the rules of the road. Remember, being more cautious, obeying all traffic laws and being a safe, courteous driver, will enhance the safety of our children and makeReginaa safer community for all.
