A 16 year-old male youth will make his first court appearance in Youth Court tomorrow (Tuesday, July 10th) on a charge of Second-Degree Murder. The charge stems from investigation into an incident last night, July 8, 2012, in the area of 5th Avenue and Rae Street, which resulted in the death of a 31 year-old Regina male.
At about 9:57 p.m. on Sunday, July 8, 2012, police were dispatched to a report of a fight in the area of 5th Avenue and Rae Street. When police arrived at that intersection, EMS was already onscene. Police took a 16 year-old male youth into custody, while about a block west, at 5th and Retallack, EMS was giving emergency medical treatment to an adult male. The male, later identified as 31 year-old Derrick Justin AMYOTTE, DOB; 1981-04-23, of Regina, was taken to hospital by EMS, but died approximately an hour later. Mr. AMYOTTE’s family has been notified of his death. Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim and suspect were involved in a fight near 5th Avenue and Rae Street and it is alleged the victim was fatally wounded in the altercation. Further investigation led to a charge against the 16 year-old suspect in custody. This is the third homicide in Regina in 2012.
The accused cannot be named in accordance with the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He is charged with Second Degree Murder, contrary to section 235(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada. The youth will be remanded for a court appearance in Youth Court on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at 9:30 a.m. While police are not seeking other suspects in this case, police are asking that anyone with information to add to this investigation contact the Regina Police Service at 777-6500 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
