With the Queen City Ex in town, we know our community is excited about the rides, the games and the fun. Know who is more excited about all the free rides this week? Thieves.
This month alone there have been 34 thefts of vehicles due to spare keys being left inside. Of those 34 stolen, 5 had the keys in the ignition, and 29 had spare keys left in the car (centre console, glove box, etc). There have also been 5 vehicle thefts this week where a garage door opener was left in a vehicle parked outside. Thieves gained access to the car (usually unlocked), opened the garage and stole the vehicle inside.
The Regina Police Service is reminding vehicle owners that many of these incidents are completely preventable by removing enticers like spare change and garage door openers from plain sight. Lock your doors and don’t keep spare keys for one vehicle inside the other one. We understand that the perception may be to leave the doors unlocked to avoid getting your windows smashed. If that is your reason, please help us help you by removing valuables, keys, and garage door openers.
Spread the word to neighbours, friends and followers to call us immediately if you see something suspicious such as someone rummaging through your neighbour’s car, or individuals walking up and down the street trying all the door handles on parked vehicles. Report suspicious activity to police by calling 306-777-6500. If you see a crime in progress, call 9-1-1.
