Football fans in Regina and area are making weekend plans around the last regular season game at Mosaic Stadium. On Saturday, November 2, 2013, the Saskatchewan Roughriders host the Edmonton Eskimos at Mosaic Stadium. As with every game this season, it’s anticipated there will be a big fan turnout. Fans are encouraged to park away from the stadium or use transit in order to alleviate traffic congestion in the area. The goal of the Regina Police Service is to help everyone get to and from the game in safety, as well as minimize any inconvenience for residents of the neighbourhood around Mosaic Stadium. As always, we will have additional members assigned to manage traffic in the area. We remind motorists to please drive safely and demonstrate patience, especially once fans are leaving the stadium at the end of the game.
At the end of the game:
• Vehicle traffic should head west toward the exit at 11th Avenue and Lewvan Drive.
• There will be one exit from the Exhibition Grounds at Princess Street onto Dewdney Avenue, but bear in mind that this will become congested quickly.
• We recommend the exit from the Brandt Centre parking lots to 11th Avenue and Lewvan Drive.
• No exit from the Exhibition Grounds onto Elphinstone Street across from the Fieldhouse.
• No vehicles on the 1500 and 1600 blocks of Retallack Street. Access for local residents only.
• Road Closures: the 1500 block of Retallack Street at Dewdney Avenue ; 9th Avenue at Retallack Street and 10th Avenue at Retallack Street, which will restrict westbound traffic on 9th Avenue and 10th Avenue at Retallack Street.
• No Parking Zones: 9th Avenue, east of the stadium, prior to, during and after football games.
These zones are necessary to expedite City Transit and to maintain an emergency vehicle corridor for police, fire and EMS should the need arise.
Other reminders to help everyone enjoy game days include:
1) Remove all valuables for your vehicle and lock the doors. Recognize that extra keys and garage door openers are considered “valuable” in the eyes (and hands) of thieves. There will be additional police patrols around the stadium during games to deter theft-from-auto and theft-of-auto but it’s always better to remove or reduce the opportunity for crime;
2) Respect the neighbourhood. Mosaic Stadium is in a residential neighbourhood and visitors should always ensure they park vehicles legally, refrain from littering and respect the property of others;
3) Consider using public transit or car-pooling to make your travel plans easier;
4) Don’t drink and drive…just don’t do it. It’s so much easier if you take the guesswork out of it. If you are going to have a few drinks, have someone else (who is sober) do the driving. Just make the plan and then stick to the playbook.
Police are asking motorists and pedestrians to follow directions, have patience and be courteous to each other. Enjoy Game Day and be safe!
