A 22 year-old male is facing charges in connection with a Break and Enter-in-progress that occurred overnight in the 800 block Retallack Street. In the response to this incident, a single shot was fired by an officer in response to an attacking dog, but the shot struck the ground and not the animal. There were no injuries to any persons or the dog as a result, but the Regina Police Service and Animal Control personnel are continuing efforts to locate the dog, in the event that it poses a threat to public safety. As of 1530 hours, February 14, 2015, the dog has not been located. Any member of the public who encounters a dog, loose in the area of the 800 block Retallack Street, should contact Animal Control or the Regina Police Service.
At approximately 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 14, 2015, the Regina Police Service received a call reporting two females and a male, outside a house in the 800 block Retallack Street, who were yelling and attempting to break into the house through the doors and windows. A Canine officer was the first at the scene and as he approached the house, the suspects fled to the rear of the house. The officer, with his police dog on a tracking leash, was charged three or four times by a large, unleashed, running dog, of the type commonly known as a pitbull. The officer yelled at the dog and eventually kicked it to drive it away. The dog left the area but attacked again moments later as the officer was taking one of the suspects into custody. In spite of a number of attempts to repel the dog, the animal continued its aggressive advances, nearly biting the officer several times. The police dog and the pitbull were engaged in a fight by this time. The officer ordered the suspect to walk a distance away and when the pitbull advanced on him again, he fired a single shot from his pistol, which struck the ground. The dog fled, unharmed, and the officer took the male suspect into custody, without further incident. The other two suspects have not been located.
Twenty-two year-old Elijah Blue CARDINAL, DOB: 1993-01-29, of Regina, is charged with Breach of Probation [733.1(1) CC]. The accused will be released to appear in Provincial Court on April 1, 2015.
The discharge of the officer’s firearm, like any other police use of force, will be subject to review by the Regina Police Service Use of Force Review Board. All uses of force are also reported to the Saskatchewan Police Commission.
