A 17 year-old male youth is facing a charge of Uttering Threats after investigation into an alleged threat made against an 18 year-old male student through social media. News of the potential threat caused two Regina High Schools to enact a Secure-the-Building protocol on Monday, January 11, 2016.
This investigation began on Monday morning, January 11, 2016, when police received information that a student at Balfour High School had received a possible threat through social media. Investigators were assigned to determine the identity of the sender. At the same time, School Resource Officers were present at both Balfour Collegiate and Miller Comprehensive Catholic High School (because of its proximity), as the schools enacted their Secure-the-Building protocols. As the name suggests, this is a situation whereby all outside doors are locked to secure the building. Entry and exit of the building is at the front doors only, with police and school administration monitoring. Regular interior school activities continued in a controlled manner. The Secure-the-Building protocol was lifted at approximately 2:30 p.m. the same day. As the result of investigation into this incident, police arrested a 17 year-old male without incident. Subsequent investigation led to a charge against this individual.
The name of the accused will not be released, in accordance with the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He has been charged with Uttering Threats [264.1(1)(a) CC]. He has been released on an undertaking to appear in Youth Court on February 25, 2016 at 9:30 a.m.
