On Wednesday, March 8th, 2017, a Regina Police Service member discharged a CEW, commonly known as a Taser, in an arrest. This advisory is in keeping with the Regina Police Service’s commitment to notify the public each time a CEW is discharged against a person.
On March 8th, 2017, at approximately 9:00 p.m., police attended to a residence in the 6500 block of 1st Avenue North to locate a 30 year-old male in relation to several outstanding arrest warrants. When police were allowed entry in the residence they were met by the 30 year-old male brandishing a baseball bat. After the male failed to comply with police commands to drop the baseball the police deployed a CEW. The CEW was not successful in making contact with the male however the male eventually complied with police commands and he was safely taken into custody. The male was uninjured during the arrest.
The use of the CEW has been documented as per policy and will be reviewed by a Use of Force Committee – a committee within the Service. All uses of force are also reported to the Saskatchewan Police Commission – an oversight body independent of the Regina Police Service.
