The Regina Police Service is continuing its investigation into a recent vehicle collision at the intersection of Lewvan Drive and 4th Avenue.
On the morning of August 13, 2018, shortly before 8:20 AM, police attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle in the area of Sherwood Drive and Lewvan Drive. Once police activated emergency equipment, the suspect vehicle evaded police. The suspect vehicle continued southbound on Lewvan Drive and collided with a second vehicle which was making a left turn from eastbound 4th Avenue onto northbound Lewvan Drive. The driver of the suspect vehicle, a 28 year-old male, fled the scene on foot and was arrested nearby a short time later. The suspect was transported to hospital and treated for minor injuries.
The driver of the second vehicle was transported to hospital, not a passenger as was originally indicated in the previous release. The injuries sustained by the driver of the second vehicle have now been deemed to be serious.
Further investigation has clarified more of the circumstances leading up to this collision; the Regina Police Service has now asked the Ministry of Justice to appoint an independent observer to its continuing investigation, as police were pursuing the suspect vehicle prior to the collision. The matter is also being reviewed internally by the Pursuit Review Board.
Twenty-eight year-old Kirk Carmichael SZAKACS, of Regina, is charged with:
- Flight causing bodily harm while pursued by police officer [249.1(4)(a) CC].
SZAKACS made his first appearance on this charge in Provincial Court this morning, Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at 9:30 AM.
