On Tuesday, April 23, 2019, a Regina Police Service member discharged a CEW, commonly known as a Taser, in an arrest. This advisory is in keeping with the Regina Police Service’s commitment to notify the public each time a CEW is discharged against a person.
On Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at approximately 11:45 p.m., police attended to the 1000 Block of Arnason Street in response to a 23 year old female threatening self-harm. Upon arrival police encountered the female with a knife and police immediately began to negotiate with her however the female was non-compliant and refused to drop the knife. The police perceived the immediate need for control due to a high risk of death or serious bodily harm prompting one officer to deploy the CEW. The female dropped the knife and was safely taken into custody. The female suffered minor injuries during the arrest. She was assessed by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and was then transported to hospital for assessment.
The use of the CEW has been documented as per policy and will be reviewed by a Use of Force Committee – a committee within the Service. All uses of force are also reported to the Saskatchewan Police Commission – an oversight body independent of the Regina Police Service.
