The Regina Police Service, in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Coroners Service, has begun a death investigation as the result of an incident that occurred earlier today (Saturday).
On Saturday, May 4, 2019, at 5:38 a.m., the Regina Police Communications Centre received a call of a disturbance in an apartment residence in the 1900 block of Halifax Street. When police arrived on scene, they found an adult male subject who was holding an adult female hostage. The male was armed with a knife. There was a request made for additional resources, including Crisis Negotiators, SWAT and EMS. While the circumstances are now the subject of investigation, which will include oversight appointed by the Ministry of Justice, it can be confirmed that one of the officers present discharged a police firearm. The male subject was pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS. Identification of the deceased was confirmed and notification was made to family members of the deceased person. The identity of the deceased person will not be released at this time. The primary purpose of any investigation of a police-involved death is to discover the circumstances surrounding the events. This investigation process has now begun, in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Coroners Service and with oversight from the Ministry of Justice.
There will be more details made available as this investigation progresses.
