Residents of the 1900 block of Winnipeg Street saw an increased police presence in their area overnight and into the very early morning hours today, Friday, September 13, 2019. What began as an arrest on outstanding warrants became an Emergency Services callout, when the accused male refused patrol officers’ efforts to negotiate him out of a residence on the block. The outstanding warrants were for firearms and violent offences and officers knew that there were other people in the house who may potentially be at risk of harm.
Residents in nearby houses were contacted and advised to shelter in place. At approximately 2:00 a.m., a request for Crisis Negotiators and Special Weapons and Tactics members was authorized. At approximately 3:00 a.m., an adult male and two adult females exited the house and were safely taken into custody. The male was arrested on the warrants and will make an appearance in Provincial Court at 2:00 p.m. on those matters. The females were released.
Investigation associated to the residence and a prohibited firearm seized from the property is ongoing.
