Three youths: two males and one female, are facing charges as the result of a traffic stop in Regina in the early-morning hours of Friday, June 24, 2022. A firearm was recovered in this incident.
At approximately 3:00 a.m. on June 24th, patrol officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of 3rd Avenue and Garnet Street. One of the passengers in the vehicle gave police a false name. When the officer approached the vehicle he saw what appeared to be a sawed-off rifle on the front passenger side of the car. The object was confirmed to be a working firearm; fortunately, there was no ammunition accompanying the firearm. The 15 year-old male youth was arrested for a breach of probation (curfew) and a breach of a firearms prohibition. Further investigation led to the arrests of a 15 year-old female and a 17 year-old male, from the same vehicle.
The youths cannot be named in accordance with the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The 15 year-old male is charged with:
- Breach of Probation, s. 137 YCJA;
- Breach of Firearms Prohibition, s. 117.01(1) Cc;
- Unsafe Storage of a Firearm, s. 86(1) CC;
- Possession of a Weapon for a Purpose Dangerous to Public Peace, s. 88 CC;
- Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized, s. 92(1) CC;
- Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle, s. 94(1)(a)(ii) CC;
- Possession of a Firearm knowing the serial number has been tampered with, s. 108(1)(b) CC; and
- Obstruction (false name), s. 129(a) CC.
The 15 year-old male made his first court appearance on these charges in Youth Court at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 24, 2022.
The 17 year-old male is charged with:
- Breach of Firearms Prohibition, s. 117.01(1) Cc;
- Unsafe Storage of a Firearm, s. 86(1) CC;
- Possession of a Weapon for a Purpose Dangerous to Public Peace, s. 88 CC;
- Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized, s. 92(1) CC;
- Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle, s. 94(1)(a)(ii) CC; and
- Possession of a Firearm knowing the serial number has been tampered with, s. 108(1)(b) CC.
The 17 year-old male made his first court appearance on these charges in Youth Court at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 24, 2022.
The 15 year-old female was charged only with a Breach of Undertaking (curfew), s. 145 CC. She was released with a future court date of August 11, 2022.
