At approximately 10:40 p.m., on July 1st, 2023, members of the Regina Police Service Public Safety Unit working in Wascana Park for Canada Day Celebrations were advised of a possible fight. As police approached the location of the fight, they observed a male waving around a machete. Police approached the male, instructing him to drop the machete and he fled on foot towards a large group of civilians who were watching the fireworks display. The male continued to wave the machete as he was fleeing from police and would not obey commands from police to drop the weapon. An officer deployed a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW), which was effective, resulting in the male falling to the ground and subsequently taken into custody without further incident.
A fourteen year-old male who cannot be named in accordance with provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is charged with:
- Assault with a Weapon [CC 267(a)]
- Possession of a Weapon Dangerous to Public Peace [CC 88]
- Carry a Concealed Weapon [CC 90]
The youth will make his first court appearance on these charged in Youth Provincial Court at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 17, 2023.
