When it comes to community safety, needs are ever-growing and constantly evolving. As the Regina Police Service works to adapt to these changing needs, we are always exploring new, cost-effective ways to make our community safer.
Recently, we launched a pilot project aimed at using marked police vehicles to deter crime, improve public safety and reduce traffic safety issues in areas of concern.
Over the course of the next several weeks, marked police vehicles will be parked in pre-determined areas around the city. At times, there will be no officers present in the vehicles, which are decommissioned patrol vehicles. However, there could be officers in the area in their active patrol vehicles and it will be difficult to tell the vehicles apart at first glance. The idea is to use visible, marked police vehicles to encourage safe behaviors.
“We don’t know yet if this will be a good fit for our city, but it has been rolled out in other jurisdictions and we thought it was worth exploring here,” notes S/Sgt. Ryan Dureau, RPS Community Services Division.
The pilot project will be evaluated in the coming months to determine its effectiveness.
