The Regina Police Service has laid charges in relation to a death investigation dating back to July 2021.
On Saturday, July 24th, 2021 at approximately 1:30 a.m., police were dispatched to the east alley of the 800 block of Queen Street for a report of an injured male. EMS also attended to the location and pronounced the 53 year-old male deceased at the scene.
Investigation by the Regina Police Service Major Crimes Unit, in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Coroners Service, determined the death is a homicide. The deceased is identified as 53 year-old Lionel Gary SCHAEFFER.
As a result of police investigation, members of the Major Crimes Unit arrested an 18 year-old male on September 29, 2023. The male has been charged with:
- Manslaughter [CC 236 (B)];
- Failure To Stop After Accident That Results In Death [CC 320.16 (3)].
The charged male was a youth at the time of the offence, so will not be identified in accordance with the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA).
The male will make his first court appearance in Provincial Youth Court on Monday, October 2, 2023 at 9:30 a.m.
