Residents and community members have expressed a strong desire to find ways to help prevent crime in their neighbourhoods. In response, the Regina Police Service (RPS) is proud to announce Community ON, a modern-day Neighborhood Watch initiative.
Community ON offers a comprehensive suite of programs aimed at helping the public understand how they can contribute to crime prevention.
Launching immediately, Community ON builds on several existing programs and features two new additions: Neighbourhood Watch Link and the Safe Neighbourhood Camera Registry.
Neighbourhood Watch Link promotes the two-way sharing of information between the RPS, residents, and businesses. The RPS will regularly provide residents relevant information on crime trends in their neighbourhoods via partnership with community associations. The community association will then share that information with residents on social media and beyond.
Neighbourhood Watch Link will be piloted with the Arcola East Community Association before spanning across all communities in the city, later this year. Residents in Ward 4 can expect to see signage going up in their area to remind everyone that it is a Neighbourhood Watch area and provide the phone number and website to report criminal/suspicious activity.
The Safe Neighbourhood Camera Registry is a voluntary and free program that allows participants the opportunity to assist police by letting them know if they have security cameras.
Participation is simple:
- Sign up and let the Regina Police Service know you have security cameras.
- Should a crime occur in the area, police can reach out to those on the camera registry to ask for video that may assist in an investigation.
When we are able to conclude investigations quickly and hold offenders accountable, this can assist in reducing crime in our city.
We cannot do the work of crime prevention alone. The RPS is proud to work with the City of Regina, City Council and our Community Partners to help make the city a safer place for everyone. The RPS also thanks the Arcola East Community Association for collaborating with us on the Neighbourhood Watch Link initiative.
The message to residents and businesses is two-fold, check out the many crime prevention programs we offer and “If you see something, say something”. When we have an accurate understanding of what is taking place in the community, we can better plan police resources.
Anyone who wants to report a non-emergent crime can do so by calling 306-777-6500, report online through our website, or come in to RPS at 1717 Saskatchewan Drive to speak with an officer at the front desk.
