The Regina Police Service Stolen Auto Unit targets repeat offenders and actively searches for and recovers stolen vehicles. During the course of their duties, members of the unit also assist other RPS units in investigating ongoing street crimes.
The Stolen Auto Unit is comprised of six members; including one Sergeant and one Corporal. The unit was originally comprised of two members, but in 1997, the unit grew after a large spike in the number of stolen vehicles in Regina. In recent years, the recovery rate of stolen vehicles in Regina is approximately 90%.
The unit actively references Stolen Auto Database which was developed to efficiently monitor targets who have been highlighted by the Stolen Auto Unit. Curfew checks are often completed to closely monitor the active targets who have been released on conditions pending court proceedings.
The Regina Police Service has an active partnership with SGI and they meet on a regular basis to discuss stolen auto reduction strategies.
