Under the direction of the NCO i/c Major Crimes & Vulnerable Persons and Victim Services Coordinator, assists primarily Indigenous victims of crime and their families by providing information, support and referrals and addressing community concerns within the Justice system on behalf of Indigenous victims of crime.
(1) Provides victims of crime and traumatic events with emotional support, information and practical assistance and referral to community resources. This may be through telephone contact, out of office visits, or walk in inquiries.
(2) Provides early intervention/preventative services to Indigenous victims of crime and their families and assistance to victims on case, police and justice system procedures.
(3) Submits reports as required and attends meetings hosted by Ministry of Justice, Victim Services Branch when feasible.
(4) Implements a community awareness program regarding Indigenous Resource Officers and Victim Services through exposure, public speaking and community education, and participates on internal and external boards and committees when requested.
(5) Provides advice and assistance to Police on cases involving Indigenous people and provides outreach services to Indigenous people to encourage participation as volunteers for the Victim Services program.
(6) Assist with crime prevention programs targeted toward Indigenous youth and adults.
(7) Assists Cultural Relations Unit and the Community Programs Section to maintain and encourage communication between the Police, community agencies and Victim Services.
(8) Other related duties as assigned.
(1) Degree in Social Work, Social Sciences, Education or Human Justice. Experience in the human service field would be an asset
(2) Good interpersonal skills, personal maturity and strong problem solving skills.
(3) Thorough knowledge of urban Indigenous culture, either First Nation and/or Metis and demonstrated ability to work within the Indigenous community.
(4) Must complete Victim Services training.
(5) Must be willing to work shifts, days and evenings with some weekends.
(6) Must have a valid driver’s license and adhere to a Code of Ethics.
