In Regina, we are proud to be living in a progressive city with many opportunities for its residents…but lately, some people are taking advantage of certain “opportunities”. Vehicles that are left warming up, running with keys in the ignition, are literally an invitation to auto thieves.
In the past week, in Regina (January 17-24), there have been 29 reported incidents of theft of auto. Roughly one third of the vehicles are trucks; the rest are cars and SUVs. Unfortunately about one-third of the reported thefts show that the vehicles had keys inside and, in some cases, were left running with the keys in the ignition. Some vehicle owners indicate “not sure” when asked about whether or not there were keys inside; this may be reluctance to admit their vehicles were left unattended while running. Giving an auto thief the opportunity to take a vehicle is a “lose-lose” proposition for all of us.
The Regina Police Service is inviting all vehicle owners to exercise their power over crime. Please lock your vehicle, when it’s not in use. Take your keys. Don’t leave your vehicle unattended and running, with keys in the ignition. Remove valuables from plain sight. Always report suspicious activity and call 9-1-1 if you see any crime in progress.
Have a great weekend!
